Introduction

"The first pure domestically produced battleship gun, developed at Kure Naval Yard Gunnery Division. Calibered at 41cm and slightly exceeding 16inch (40.6cm), it was the largest battleship gun until Yamato class's 46cm gun. Nagato and Mutsu equipped with this gun was well-known nationally as members of World's Big Seven."

Developed for 88 fleet plan of Japanese Navy in 1920s where Japan intended to built eight battleships and battlecruisers, under expectation that United States will develop a 16inch guns for their battleships (and it actually happened). Eventually the plan for Amagi class battlecruisers and Kaga class battleships were both aborted, leaving Nagato class the only class in Japanese Navy to carry this gun.
