Mechanics
Ship Speed can be increased to Fast, Fast+, or Fastest by using a combination of 
"Turbine" and "Boilers".
See the following tables for details (all synergies listed already include 1 turbine
as it is an absolute requirement):
- Devs claim that higher speed values increase evasion. However, its magnitude/scope/existence is still investigated by players (preliminary tests suggest that there is no significant increase in evasion[1][2]).
