The netting/leaves on her turret and the logs fitted onto her on her base damaged CG are references to events that transpired after the Battle of Tassafaronga. During the battle, Minneapolis participated in the sinking of Takanami, while consequently getting hit by her torpedoes in the process. She was struck on her portside, with her bow collapsing and nearly torn off. Her crew jury-rigged a makeshift bow made from coconut logs/scrap and applied camouflage of nets and palm fronds at Tulagi before reaching Espiritu Santo for a more acceptable temporary bow, after which she departed to Pearl Harbor for proper repairs.
The triangular hair ornament that her and her sister share is essentially an outline of their forecastle and anchor chain system from the top down.
