During the dive, Parks revealed he was a fan of KanColle and he placed his nendoroid Johnston aboard the DSSV Limiting Factor as a good luck charm when they searched for the wreck. She sits upright and is well preserved at a depth of 21,180 ft (6,460 m) and was originally the world's deepest discovered wreck until June 2022 when USS Samuel B. Roberts was found at a depth of 6,985 meters (22,621 feet). Parks revealed that Johnston's wreck lies not too far from Samuel B. Roberts when he replied to Zeco's tweet about hoping Sam's isn't too lonely.

** For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as commanding officer of the U.S.S. ''Johnston'' in action against major units of the enemy Japanese fleet during the battle off Samar on 25 October 1944. The first to lay a smokescreen and to open fire as an enemy task force, vastly superior in number, firepower and armor, rapidly approached. Comdr. Evans gallantly diverted the powerful blasts of hostile guns from the lightly armed and armored carriers under his protection, launching the first torpedo attack when the ''Johnston'' came under straddling Japanese shellfire. Undaunted by damage sustained under the terrific volume of fire, he unhesitatingly joined others of his group to provide fire support during subsequent torpedo attacks against the Japanese and, outshooting and outmaneuvering the enemy as he consistently interposed his vessel between the hostile fleet units and our carriers despite the crippling loss of engine power and communications with steering aft, shifted command to the fantail, shouted steering orders through an open hatch to men turning the rudder by hand and battled furiously until the ''Johnston'', burning and shuddering from a mortal blow, lay dead in the water after 3 hours of fierce combat. Seriously wounded early in the engagement, Comdr. Evans, by his indomitable courage and brilliant professional skill, aided materially in turning back the enemy during a critical phase of the action. His valiant fighting spirit throughout this historic battle will venture as an inspiration to all who served with him.

He was an Oklahoman and proud of the Indian blood he had in him. We called him-though not to his face-the Chief. The ''Johnston'' was a fighting ship, but he was the heart and soul of her.

  1. The day Johnston was commissioned, then-Lt. Cmdr. Ernest E. Evans made a speech to the crew, quoting a phrase attributed to John Paul Jones: "This is going to be a fighting ship. I intend to go in harm's way, and anyone who doesn't want to go along had better get off right now."
  2. This line is shared with expedition selection, resource collection, instant repair and development.
  3. While Johnston fired a barrage of shells that managed to force back Yahagi and her four destroyers from the Taffy 3 escort carriers, the captain of one of her guns shouted down to the handling room, "More shells! More shells!"
  4. According to survivors' accounts, a Japanese destroyer pulled up to the sinking Johnston to finish her off. The Japanese crew stood at attention and its captain saluted Johnston as she finally sank. Japanese accounts suggest this ship was the Yukikaze.

Trivia

General Information
  • She is named after Lieutenant John V. Johnston, a Civil War commander.
  • She was launched on the 25th of March 1943.
  • Sunk on the 25th of October 1944, Battle of Samar
    • The wreck was discovered by Caladan Oceanic under the guidance of Parks Stephenson and Victor Vescovo on the 31st of March 2021. During the dive, Parks revealed he was a fan of KanColle and he placed his nendoroid Johnston aboard the DSSV Limiting Factor as a good luck charm when they searched for the wreck. She sits upright and is well preserved at a depth of 6460 m (21180 ft) and was originally the world's deepest discovered wreck until June 2022 when USS Samuel B. Roberts was found at a depth of 6985 m (22621 ft). Parks revealed that Johnston's wreck lies not too far from Samuel B. Roberts when he replied to Zeco's tweet about hoping Sam's isn't too lonely.
    • Parks Stephenson made a 3D Render of Johnston's wreck showed sustained damage and the aft section missing. This render was also sent to Zeco.
    • As per the dive data and analysis by Parks Stephenson, Johnston sustained direct hits from Yamato's 46 cm guns. This confirms that USS Johnston and USS Gambier Bay have been sunk by Yamato gunfire.
Update History
Misc
  • USS Johnston earned 6 battle stars and, for the Battle of Samar, a Presidential Unit Citation. Her character has two stars on her collar, one bronze and one silver - the silver one represents 5 battle stars.
  • The signal flags at the end of her hair ribbons correspond to her radio call sign, NIKZ.
  • The medal slung over her left arm is the Medal of Honor awarded posthumously to Evans. The full citation is as follows:
    • For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Johnston in action against major units of the enemy Japanese fleet during the battle off Samar on 25 October 1944. The first to lay a smokescreen and to open fire as an enemy task force, vastly superior in number, firepower, and armor, rapidly approached. Comdr. Evans gallantly diverted the powerful blasts of hostile guns from the lightly armed and armored carriers under his protection, launching the first torpedo attack when the Johnston came under straddling Japanese shellfire. Undaunted by damage sustained under the terrific volume of fire, he unhesitatingly joined others of his group to provide fire support during subsequent torpedo attacks against the Japanese and, outshooting and outmaneuvering the enemy as he consistently interposed his vessel between the hostile fleet units and our carriers despite the crippling loss of engine power and communications with steering aft, shifted command to the fantail, shouted steering orders through an open hatch to men turning the rudder by hand and battled furiously until the Johnston, burning and shuddering from a mortal blow, lay dead in the water after 3 hours of fierce combat. Seriously wounded early in the engagement, Comdr. Evans, by his indomitable courage and brilliant professional skill, aided materially in turning back the enemy during a critical phase of the action. His valiant fighting spirit throughout this historic battle will venture as an inspiration to all who served with him.
    • His gunnery officer Bob Hagen stated: "The skipper was a fighting man from the soles of his broad feet to the ends of his straight black hair. He was an Oklahoman and proud of the Indian blood he had in him. We called him-though not to his face-the Chief. The Johnston was a fighting ship, but he was the heart and soul of her.
