- ↑ Lt Cdr Itakura Mitsuma
- ↑ Itakura and I-41's survival late in the war was allegedly based on this strategy, which was the opposite of standard procedure. While this counterintuitively leaves the submarine visible in broad daylight, his targets may have become complacent with superior radars and not expected submerged submarines at night.
- ↑ This was Vice Admiral Samejima Tomoshige, who had established his Eighth Fleet headquarters in Buin, Bougainville in New Guinea. Back in 1935, Itakura had gotten upset over the behavior of a superior and punched Samejima, the captain of their ship Mogami, while drunk. Samejima showed leniency, and Itakura repaid him years later in 1944 with three dangerous runs to Buin. On one of these trips he brought a bottle of whiskey, which Samejima kept to his dying day.
- ↑ Another of Itakura's feats was supposedly warding off a B-24 attack on his submarine by waving his cap, pretending to be a US sub.
- ↑ This line is shared with expedition selection, resource collection, instant repair and development.
- ↑ (Soft-shelled) turtle was a derisive nickname for Japanese submarines, similar to the general English idiom of "sitting duck". Itakura's 1995 autobiography is also titled something along the lines of Diary of a Turtle Captain's Youth.

23:00 Play |
2300. Midnight, huh. It's important to stay surfaced by day and submerged by night, even if that completely goes against doctrine. The enemy's got amazing radar, you see. So their guard's down at night, meaning you can sneak up behind them and blast away. It's important to think with your own head and not blindly follow doctrine. |
- ↑ Itakura derided the "king of toads" for its extremely noisy engines

The details |
---|
When Itakura was in command of I-2, after some water damage to the sub, he and some of the crew decided to get rid of all of the liquor onboard by drinking it. Those who could not drink were asked to keep watch and prevent anyone from getting onto the deck for safety. Itakura decided to come up to check for himself and then fell into the freezing water while attempting to urinate. Nearly dying, he was successfully resuscitated. When the crew of Heian Maru noticed the commotion and signaled to check (イカニサレシヤ), Itakura replied:
While Itakura was ashamed by the ordeal, some of his subordinates and higher-ups who found out were impressed and nicknamed him “immortal” (不死身). |
