Trivia

General Information

• Named after the Salmon fish.
• She was launched on the 15th of June 1937.
• She was heavily utilized and had a good career with nine battle stars.
• Credited with sinking Asahi on the 3rd of May 1942.
• She had several brushes with danger and had a particularly tough engagement in the Ryūkyū Islands on the 30th of October 1944 wherein she survived close depth charge explosions:
  • She fought with Kaiboukan 22 (credited with sinking USS Harder), 29, and 33 (credited with sinking USS Trigger the next year). Salmon aggressively closed in on Kaiboukan 22 and raked her deck with her deck gun and 20mm Oerlikons. Salmon also sent a signal for other submarines to attack, forcing the defense ships to fall back.
  • She was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for this battle.
• Stricken on the 11th of October 1945, scrapped in 1946.
• Her conning tower was fashioned into a watertight caisson to hold the Baker bomb for Operation Crossroads.
