Trivia

She was designed and built by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) instead of the Navy to resupply isolated garrisons in the Pacific.
Her name "Maruyu" comes from the designation given by the IJA. Written as "○" for "Maru" and "ゆ" for "Yu". The "Yu" in her name being short for "Yusouyou", meaning "Transporter".

Thanks to the fact that most enemy units in the normal part of the game can rarely instant crit a sub once they're fully modernized, Maruyu can be used to usually tank a hit or two before she is in high need of repair. Further more, her repair time frame is among the shortest of all ships making her useful for helping along with Orel cruising, power training, and so forth since she can be brought back into battle in a short period of time.
