This gameplay mechanic is made accessible by having Akashi or Akashi Kai as your secretary.

Equipment can be improved here and sometimes upgraded into new, better equipment. Different equipment can be improved based on the day of the week and which ship you have in the second slot of your first fleet.

How to Enter
+
The Improvement Arsenal (改修工廠) is a main menu function only accessible when using Akashi as Secretary. This menu allows to upgrade and convert equipment.

+
*What equipment can be upgraded is determined by:
# Set Akashi or Akashi Kai as your secretary (first ship of the first fleet).
+
**The 2nd ship in the fleet (the "Helper"). See the full list here.
# At the home screen, hover your cursor over the factory icon).
+
**The day of the week (Japanese time).
# The Improvement Arsenal icon will slide out from beneath it as shown.
+
This page provides information about the menu. Please see Improvement for details on equipment improvement.
# Move your cursor to that icon and click.

How to Use
+
How to Access
* Improvement materials are the primary component for improvement. They can be obtained through the following means:
+

# Specific quests
+
The Improvement Arsenal is only accessible when Akashi is Secretary.
# 4 improvement materials in exchange for a medal.

# The in-game cash shop, which sells them in packages of 10 for 700 DMM points.

# Event map clearance rewards and first class medals, the latter of which yields 10.

*  The 2nd ship in your first fleet determines which upgrades are available.

*  Improvements can fail.

**  Your chance of failure rises with equipment improvement ranking.

**  Your success rate is higher when using a remodeled Akashi.

**  On failure, components used will disappear; however, the equipment being upgraded remains unchanged.

**  There is a slider that guaranteed success in exchange for an increase in required development and improvement materials.

* Equipment that has been improved will have a ★. Improvement ranks range from ★+1 to ★+10. ★+10 appears as ★max.

* All improvement attempts from ★+6 onward use up equipment (most of the time this is the same as the equipment being upgraded). This requirement is present on some equipment even from ★+0.

** Locked and previously improved equipment cannot be used as improvement fodder.

** As equipment is spent even on failure, you are recommended to use the success slider when improvements consume rare equipment.

* There is no visible stat difference between improved and unimproved equipment.

** Improvements on equipment have been shown to increase firepower, torpedo and ASW damage depending on the category of the equipment. Speculated to be a bonus on base attack power.

** Preliminary results as of May 31, 2015 are:

*** 12.7cm Twin Gun Mount, 61cm Quad (Oxygen) Torpedo Mount, Type 94 Depth Charge, etc:

**** ★+1~3: +1 bonus to firepower/torpedo/ASW

**** ★+4~8: +2 bonus to firepower/torpedo/ASW

**** ★+9~10: +3 bonus to firepower/torpedo/ASW

*** 35.6cm Twin Gun Mount, 41cm Twin Gun Mount, etc:

**** ★+1: +1 bonus to firepower

**** ★+2~4: +2 bonus to firepower

**** ★+5~7: +3 bonus to firepower

**** ★+8~10: +4 bonus to firepower

*** Depth charges, sonars, fire directors, and searchlights increase shelling damage (Type 91 FD ★+10 shown to increase effective firepower by 3). Torpedoes and autocannons do not.

:::*The damage increase is speculated to be the same formula as the 12.7cm Twin Gun Mount.

::* Autocannons improvements increases the damage for torpedo salvo. (Example: 25mm Triple Autocannon Mount ★+9 shown to increase effective torpedo by 3)

:::*The damage increase is speculated to be the same formula as the 61cm Quad (Oxygen) Torpedo Mount.

::*The effective increase is speculated to be <math> \text {Effective Bonus} = \text {Equipment Type Modifier} \times \sqrt {\text {★ value}}</math>, where the Equipment Type Modifier is 1.5 for large caliber guns and 1.0 otherwise. Decimal values are calculated as well.

:::*Example 1: 12.6cm Twin Gun Mount ★+6 (2.449) and ★+7 (2.645) provides a total of +5 effective bonus.

:::*Example 2: 35.6cm Twin Gun Mount ★+6 (3.674) and ★+5 (3.354) provides a total of +7 effective bonus.

:::*ASW equipment bonus are applied not to the equipment bonus nor the base ASW value, but instead  for damage calculation.

:::*The bonus is not applied to support shelling fire.

Improving Equipment

The following is how to improve equipment.

  1. The equipment available for upgrade depends on the current "Helper ship" (2nd ship next to Akashi), as well as the day of the week.
    • See the full Helper list here.
  2. Click on the "Select for Improvement" (改修工廠選択) button on the equipment to improve. This will bring up a list of all the selected equipment possessed.
    • The button will be greyed out if any of a particular equipment is not possessed or not accessible,
    • Only unequipped equipment can be improved,
    • The items of selected equipment in the brought-up list will not show the ones equipped on a land base or a ship in expedition,
    • Equipment equipped by ships can be unequipped by clicking on the Remove (外す) button. The ship's name and her level can be viewed by hovering over the button,
    • Equipment must be unlocked in order to be upgraded to another equipment.
  3. Click on the equipment to improve, then click on Improve (改修) to begin. Clicking on Return (戻る) goes back to equipment selection.
  4. Click on the Begin Improvement! (改修開始!) button to start the improvement. Clicking on Cancel Improvement (改修中止) goes back to equipment selection.

    • Upgrading an equipment may additionaly consumes Items,
    • Locked, equipped, and already improved equipment cannot be used as fodder.
  5. Improvements have a chance to fail (see below).
    1. The equipment being improved is never lost,
    2. Items are not lost if it fails,
    3. Materials (Development materialImprovement material) and any fodder equipment are lost on failure,
    4. The toggle marked Guarantee Improvement (改修確実化) will make all improvements succeed in exchange for increased costs.
    • Akashi Kai has a higher success rate than her base version.
Notes
  • It is recommended to use the guaranteed improvement toggle when dealing with expensive improvements and/or rare fodder at Improved+6 and beyond.
    • See here to find the optimal guaranteeing method.
  • See the full list of improvable equipment here.

Improvement Success Rates

Only Akashi's remodel affect the improvement success rate. Her level does not affect rates.

  • It is highly recommended that she be remodeled to Kai as soon as possible, to maximize improvement success rates.
