Interviewer: This magazine’s interview with Uchida-san is the first since June 2017. In the meantime, you’ve voiced Ark Royal and Gambier Bay. Starting with Ark Royal, could you share your impressions of these two shipgirls when compared to Warspite, whom you voiced previously?

Uchida: I think thatArk Royal is more composed and crispy looking than Warspite, so a total opposite of the ever restless me *laughs*. I voiced her with a bit lower tone than usual, to add that feeling of composure. Despite having a sharp tongue, Ark Royal is a person who deeply cares for her friends, so I tried conveying that by giving her that medieval knight’s feel, like “I will fight by myself to protect everybody!”. Because of this I’ve put more power into her attack likes, like “Swordfish, shoot!”.

I: This Winter event saw the arrival of Gambier Bay. How did you like voicing an American shipgirl?

U: I was born and raised in Australia, and if you asked me, I’d say that English there is closer to the British one, so I could use my natural accent for Ark Royal and Warspite. However, there are some pronunciation peculiarities between British and American English, which I had to keep in mind while voicing Gambier Bay.

I: Was it really that different from the British ships?

U: For example, American and British pronunciations of “A” and “R” are somewhat different… We have this in Japanese too, I bet you’ve thought “Oh, this person is from Kansai”, when hearing Kansaiben, at least once. It just feels different. Before recording I’ve asked my American friends about pronunciation differences and studied really hard, to better prepare for the job. I also planned to have Ark Royal’s “Admiral” pronounced differently from Warspite’s, so I’d be extremely happy if it was noticed.

I: You said that Ark Royal is a total opposite of you. How about Gambier Bay then?

U: I think that just like me, she’s always flustered and fidgety, so there might be some resemblance *laughs*. Warspite and Ark Royal are elegant and high class girls, so I had to give off that royalty vibe while voicing them. Gambier Bay on the other hand feels more natural and down to earth, so I could be more relaxed when voicing her.

I: During this Winter 2018 Event, Warspite can come to Admiral’s rescue as part of the Friend Fleet. Could you share your impressions about her in this role?

U: When Warspite comes to the rescue, she calls her own fleet the “Grand Fleet”, which I think sounds very impressive. I felt really proud to be a part of this fleet. So, I thought that lines like “All forces, charge!” should raise the tension a little bit, but if I overdid, Warspite’s royal feel would disappear, so in the end I’ve spent a lot of time analyzing this. It’s hard to describe it with words, but…

I: Could you please give some examples of these nuances while including some English?

U: For example, when Warspite rushes to help you as a part of the Friend Fleet, I think that by giving off this “having a strong will” vibe, she can face the enemy while trying to help her friends and still be an inspiration to her own fleet. I tried to include this kind of nuances while voicing her.

I: By the way, you’ve always voiced foreign shipgirls. Have you ever thought about lending your voice to a Japanese girl?

U: I did! If I had such an opportunity, I’d like to take up the challenge of voicing this real “yamato nadeshiko”-like shipgirl. I’m a bit worried about acting solely in Japanese, but I want to try and give it my best!

I: Next, let’s talk about real life events. You’ve taken part in the live performance at Fuji Q Highland during the Zuiun Festival in 2017. Could you share with us how it felt to wear Warspite’s costume?

U: As it was a made-to-measure costume, which I thought turned out amazing, I couldn’t wait for the day to come, so I can try it on! On the day of the event I was extremely nervous, but seeing how everybody on the audience was in such high spirits, my nerves quickly dissipated. You know, the clothes were great, but what really made it amazing, was the amount of accessories, together with the necklace and the crown. All of that, the costume, everybody in the audience... I waved at them and it really made me feel as if I’ve become a true princess *laughs*.

I: You’ve also unveiled the 4th KanColle Naval Review. Not only that, but you also sang Tsukiyomi with other VAs. What do you think about this song?

U: The truth is, it’s the first song I’ve ever recorded. When the day came, I was a bundle of nerves… but, I really like singing, so I enjoyed it to the fullest. At first I had been completely stiff until I was told it’s ok to put more emotions into singing. After that, I’ve started singing while trying to express all the feelings that I had felt when reading the lyrics. Parts like “we laughed, we cried” create a bit melancholic mood, leading to a very emotional song. I really love it.

I: Lastly, could you share some of your enthusiasm for KanColle?

U: This year KanColle will have its 5th anniversary and the 6th year will begin, so I’m feeling more and more excited. To be associated with such a brand, makes me extremely happy. Firstly, as I’m still a beginner, I’m going to work hard to become a better Admiral before Phase 2. I hope to become good enough to be able to save the shipgirls I’ve voiced. This Winter event “Showdown at Operation Shou-Gou! Battle of Leyte Gulf (Part 2)”, it’s not just Gambier Bay it seems. I’ve heard you can also get Warspite and Ark Royal, so Admirals who still don’t have them, make sure to catch this chance! Please take care of these girls from now on!
