Range determines which ships attack first. It is impossible to reduce the base range of a ship, but certain equipment can extend it.

USN DDs, Dan Yang, and Yukikaze Kai Ni are the only DDs able ti reach:
- Long Range, once equipped with an SG Radar
  ,
- Very Long Range, once equipped with both an Initial and a Late SG radar.
Using both a Very Long Range equipment and a Type 2 Reconnaissance Aircraft on Ise Kai Ni or Hyuuga Kai Ni, will set them at "Longest Range".
