Trivia
All 3 ships of the Taiyou-class (Taiyou, Unyou, and Chuuyou), were initially built as "Nitta Maru-class cargo liners", with those ships being initially designed to eventually be converted into carriers to bypass the Naval Treaties restrictions.
- As the Nitta Maru-class was operated by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), the three ships were named respectively Nittamaru, Yawatamaru, and Kasugamaru (NYK).
Shinyou was not a Taiyou-class in real life, being her separate unique "Shinyou-class". She nonetheless followed the same design principles, being a carrier converted from the German ocean liner Scharnhorst.
