Gameplay Notes

Special Mechanics

  • Able to perform night battle special attacks without night operations personnel at Kai Ni E.
  • Able to freely convert between Kai Ni and Kai Ni E.
    • When converting, you need to pay the full resource cost again.
    • You will not need additional blueprints and prototype catapults.

Overview

Kai

  • Decent firepower, middle of the pack for a carrier.
  • Decent HP and armour, slightly above average for a carrier.
  • Good slot count.
  • Bad slot distribution. But single large slot allows for one powerful airstrike.

Kai Ni

  • Decent firepower for a carrier.
  • Decent HP and armour.
  • Good slot count.
  • Bad slot distribution. But single large slot allows for one powerful airstrike.

Analysis

Priority:

  • Kai: Medium
She will likely be the first carrier that you come across because she is a quest reward. Her important stats being slightly better than average means she will serve you well as an early carrier. Her good slot count is let down by her less than ideal slot distribution. The two medium slots being only 20 and positioned on top means she risks getting them emptied when facing heavy enemy anti-air. In that situation, she can lose her ability to perform artillery spotting and plane proficiency bonuses.
  • Kai Ni: Low
She doesn't really improve much slot-wise at Kai Ni. However, she does gain a 5th slot that gives her incredible flexibility. She can easily find room for recon planes to help LoS or other utility equipment like radar for routing in events. She can also contribute a lot more fighter support than other carriers while still maintaining strike power. Her increase to firepower is also another welcome buff. However, her remodel is expensive and not worth the cost for most players. Her Kai Ni is strictly a late-game upgrade.
  • Kai Ni E: Low
Her top two slots actually get worse at Kai Ni E. The slots are quite small and will be prone to getting emptied by heavy enemy anti-air. She is a powerful night carrier that can hit the night battle cap with ease while still maintaining strike power during the day. That said, her niche role means it is better to keep her in her Kai Ni form unless you have the night planes required to make her useful.

Recommended Roles

  • Air Support

  1. The Kidou Butai literally "Mobile Force" was the designation the IJN gave to it's Carrier Task Forces.
  2. Both planes were introduced after Akagi was sunk.
  3. Akagi was, essentially, sunk during the "five fateful minutes" of the Battle of Midway.
  4. Akagi was first built with three flight decks but then re-built into single deck.
  5. This line is shared with expedition selection, resource collection, instant repair and development.
  6. Pre-Midway IJN CVBG. Nickname of the 1st Air Fleet, lead by vice-Admiral Chūichi Nagumo.
  7. Akagi was struck by only a handful of bombs (possibly only one), but since she was in the middle of re-arming and refueling (bombs and fuel in the hangar rather than safe in magazines), the explosion lit the fuel and detonated some of the bombs.
  8. The overwhelming superiority of the 1st Carrier Division in the early stages of the war had led to the underestimation of U.S. naval power, which, together with poor scouting and other factors, caused the IJN's catastrophic defeat at Midway and the sinking of Akagi-chan.
  9. Akagi hates surprises from above... (A reference to when Akagi, Kaga and Souryuu were hit by dive-bombers that slipped nearly undetected until the very moment they started their attack.)
  10. Akagi was heavily damaged by secondary explosions from armaments left on deck during equipment switch when she was attacked by american dive bombers.
  11. Akagi was scuttled under the orders of Yamamoto, carried out by the 4th Destroyer fleet, where Maikaze was one of them.

Original ship

  • She is named after Mount Akagi in Gunma Prefecture, Japan.
  • Officially named the "Queen of Bauxite" thanks to her reputation for eating up all the Bauxite reserves in your inventory. Despite her rarity she's fairly accessible via quest in the early levels, as a result, many new coming admirals are shocked at her Bauxite-binging and long repair times.
    • There's another explanation for the "Bauxite Queen" title, as during the early plays of the games, a bug made Akagi consume lots of bauxite at each sortie, but that was fixed since then.
  • Originally designed as an Amagi-class Battlecruiser, Akagi was converted into a carrier after the instigation of the Washington Naval Treaty in 1921.
  • She was the first Fleet Carrier commissioned by Japan. (Kaga was launched before Akagi, but was commissioned after her).
  • Damaged by an US air attack at the Battle of Midway and scuttled by Japanese Destroyers Arashi, Hagikaze, Maikaze, and Nowaki by the orders of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto on 5 June 1942.
