  1. Her diesel engines were replaced by turbine engines during her conversion. Although more powerful, they were not enough to overcome the increased displacement and her speed was reduced by 2 knots.
  2. Kidou Butai (機動部隊) literally means 'mobile force' but the IJN used it to refer to their carrier task forces.
  3. She was the only ship damaged during the Doolittle Raid.
  4. She was used primarily for transporting planes during the war. After being badly damaged in the Bombing of Kure, she was permanently moored in the bay and had AA guns set up on her as an air defense position.
  5. This line is shared with expedition selection, resource collection, instant repair and development.
  6. Referring to the Battle of the Philippine Sea aka the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot where inexperienced IJN air crews were shot down en masse by USN AA crews.
  7. Her hangar was rendered inoperable during the 1945 Kure Raid.
  8. Technically she was sunk as an AA platform.

In-Game Tips

Taigei is a unique kanmusu as she's is considered to be both useful, but also quite limited in her capabilities despite the fact she's rare and somewhat difficult to obtain.

As a submarine tender, Taigei is considered to be a valuable component that is needed to complete a quest line that uses her in order to earn a rare set of torpedoes for submarines (53cm Submarine Bow Torpedo Mount (8 tubes)). Outside of this, her capabilities as a tender make her a rather frail unit in the fleet as she's not really useful for many stages outside of 6-1 (The Submarine Operation where she can assist in leading an all sub fleet away from one extra fight (but in return is at risk of becoming a target).

Upon gaining the medals to obtain a blueprint, Taigei can be turned into Ryuuhou while allows her to now become a carrier. Ryuuhou however doesn't end up gaining anything useful till she reaches Kai which you earn a Type 97 Torpedo Bomber (931 Air Group) which is considered to be useful for Anti-Submarine Operations since it has a rather decent ASW stat for a torpedo bomber.

Outside of these things, Ryuuhou is still however limited as her plane capacity is small and placed in a way that limits her useage and make her a difficult to use for various operations. However, like Houshou she is cheap and inexpensive to run. Making Ryuuhou another good carrier to train planes on early maps and possibly can be used for early event maps to save usage for other carriers in later maps.

Trivia

  • She started her service as a Submarine Tender until December 1941, when conversion into a Light Aircraft Carrier began.
  • She was the only major IJN vessel to be struck during the Doolittle Raid, which delayed her launch as a CVL.
  • She was the last Aircraft Carrier to sail overseas from Japan.
  • Ryuuhou's hair band bears resemblance to the Ensign of Japan Post (Japan's Postal service).
  • Ryuuhou's Kai art is based on her real-life camouflage.
  • "Taigei" means "big whale", thus the design on her AS form's dress and Ryuuhou form's hairpin. "Ryuuhou" means "dragon phoenix".
  • She is one of two ships in-game that were released with a second remodel in the same update. The other is U-511.
  • Due to her status as the only Submarine tender currently in the game, she is required for quest A37, quest D13 and quest D14.

Historical Note

Designed as a seagoing submarine tender, with floatplane facilities for scouting purposes, Taigei entered service in 1934. She was built with very high freeboard and shallow draught, which meant she was a very poor seaboat. Added to her extensively welded construction, which proved very defective, meant that she was a most unsatisfactory and unsuccessful ship.

In 1941, she was rebuilt and re-entered service as the light fleet carrier Ryuuhou. Her diesel engines were replaced with destroyer turbines in an attempt to give her higher speed, but due to displacement and dimension adjustments, she remained a very unsuccessful conversion of an already unsuccessful design. Her weak hull and poor internal sub-division severely limited her usefulness, resulting in little frontline service.

She was damaged in the Battle of the Philippine Sea and then severely damaged near Kure on 19 March 1945 by Task Force 58. She was considered a total loss and struck from the Navy List on November 30, 1945 with her scrapping occurring in 1946.
