Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2023 Summer Event Evalution!

Thank you all for participating and sharing!

The survey closed on 16:00 CEST 27.10.2023. A total of 325 people sent in replies, with the majority (62%) sourcing it from various discord server announcements, while the rest got it from reddit (32%) and other sources.

Event Overview

(1/5) While more than 83% of survey participants cleared the event, there has been a significant amount of people who have not reached their own set goals for this event (26%). The official clear rate this Event was said to be 71% this event, so keep a surveybase with higher engagement than the regular playerbase in mind when reading this evaluation.
(2/5)Mirroring official clear rates the most commonly picked difficulty on all maps was hard. E2 seemed to be the map that would have the most people not choosing the highest difficulty.
(3/5)The rewards were mostly perceived as adequate, with a higher leaning towards "too bad" on E1, E2, E4 and E7.
(4/5)Friend Fleets have been used by 69% of players, most commonly starting from E6.
(5/5)The event would accrue an average rating of 6.8.

Newcomer Review

(1/3) Out of the new girls in the Event, it was a close race for Nevada and Rodney in terms of popularity with Javelin closing in third. Salmon, Asashi, Shirakumo and C.Cappellini would be the midfield, while the two DEs get left in the dust.
(2/3) When it came to assessing the usefulness in upcoming content, Rodney as an Big 7 Touch Ship would take the uncontested first place.
(3/3) As usual, the guaranteed reward ships have been acquired by most survey participants. In terms of ships that needed to be dropped, the acquisition rate hovered around 60%

(1/1) A close race between the European Little Sister Princess and the Fortified Pillbox Princess with the Standard Type Battleship Princess as a deserved third place. The new standard enemies would not enjoy much popularity in terms of design.

(Touch) Girls und Fleets

(1/6) Most Players would be utilizing Line Ahead on E2P2, with a few dabbling in Vanguard and other Formations.
(2/6) On E3P3 more people would be using a Carrier Task Force than a STF.
(3/6) Using the Yamato-Class special attack was by far the most common way of dealing with E6P3, however lower dificulties would be more inclined to use either Nelson or Nagato-Class instead.
(4/6) Most survey participants would opt to use the Auxilliary Ship routing on E6P3.
(5/6) For E7P5 LD most players would not be utilizing the shortcut and instead route via U with a slow STF, with the Fast STF via V having less than half the users instead. Only a select few would go with the ultralight 3XX 1CL 8DD fleet, using the shortest route to the boss.
(6/6) While Nelson would be a very common pick for E7P5 LD, the utilisation of (Dupe) Yamato-Class should not be underestimated. The data for duplicate Yamato has not been specifically asked for, but inferred from E6P3 and E7P5 touch choices, accounting for difficulty.

What happened with giving strong equipment as rewards? 14inch guns? T97 recon equivalents? A DCP that was released 4 years ago and was already B-tier? The list goes on. The ribbons are nice but shouldn't be the only meaningful reward. It's a bit frustrating investing all the time and resources in an event and leaving it feeling like my fleet is none the better for clearing it. Drops could be better, rewards could be better, devs are being extremely conservative with them and it shows, sadly this doesn't make older players weaker, just prevents newer players from getting stronger. Older players will steamroll the events with legacy gear anyway, so what's the point of witholding rewards? Other than that, pacing was okay, remove 2 phases from E7 and it's also ok, I suppose.

It was better than the last event including no last event E-2H type map. Final map not quite so reliant upon do you have these 2 ships to clear readily?. Music was good as always. Like some of the new ships. Not a huge fan of 7 map events, but 2 month duration at least (though see dislikes about waiting too long for EO release). What did you hate about the Event? Too long. 5 phase map is rediculous even if E-7 P1 & P2 kind of just there. US aspect of D-Day theme barely present. Don't mind Brit focus, but needed better balance for EO. Lackluster rewards for some maps. Once again, too much delay for EO & FF. IF required (not 100% sure) M3 for Easy/Casua (arguably Med as well. Smoke mechanic over-played. Already sick of it. What else do you have to say? A decent event, and definitely better than last event which is a plus. Still, a missed opportunity IMO to really highlight non IJN shps for a theme which is one of the most iconic operations of WWII. Could what if just fine for a USN based E-6 with Colorado Touch being the must have instead of Yamato Touch for P3, and Fletcher/fletcher-class instead of Jervis. E-7 then could be British aspect of Normandy landings which it essentially was given the nothing that was P1 & P2. Understand Japanese game, but could have had a 6 map event with MO being IJN focused (4 maps), and EO being USN/Euro focued, maybe exclusively (not sure if enough non-IJN ships for that).

Spent all my resources to farm Tamanami and still didn't get her, Tanaka continues to mock me. Regarding the M3 node in E-4, if I were Tanaka, I would add a new kind of FCF that would allow retreating the slowest ship in the fleet. Tanaka sometimes gives useless equip that is used once in a lifetime like:Saiun (Disassembled for Transport) or Arctic Gear & Deck Personnel. I think it would be much simpler and more obvious historical reference than what we got in the end when we had to either sink the girl or spend damecon.

The EOs, despite being long it the final map (E7) was among some of the most creative maps I seen in a while where it appeared thinking outside the box was an important element fighting the enemies there. It was one of the times I feel I was able to creatively fight a boss in a way I wouldn't normally do so. What did you hate about the Event? The Early MO maps, namely E1 and E2 since it semed they through super powerful Ne Kais in the boss to make you forced to use massively powerful ships early even though this seems like the intended goal. Given the context of the later maps. This might be because of the fact they really put emphasis on the Japanese ships from this sequence, but I feel like it really ate up a lot of what your fleet could of done had it not been for the Ne Kais. What else do you have to say? The length of the event I feel did a nice job helping clear. Though I'm surprised we only got one line of Friend Fleets. I feel this further supports that Tanaka evaluates the need of friendly fleets based on how good or how poor Tanibe Yumi is doing in the event. Also please Tanaka, I want to see Asashi have a future.

Secondly, the wiki is now updating extremely slowly making the wait extra painful for those who doesn't have much time like me. Maps were manageable, and in fact debuffs weren't even mandatory. Momochi was actually useful. All in all I liked the event, people are going to complain about E-1 being too hard but that's mostly because everyone assumes E-1 will always be a free pass. What did you hate about the Event? Preemptive torpedoes on Ne-class Kai are a dick move. Smokescreen are very strong, possibly too much since now devs can put any sort of nightmare en route (see: E-7 node U) and you just smoke it lol. Now even if you screw up your shiplocks early on, once you complete the event, you can bring your ideal, optimized fleet to farm maps and take full advantage of gimmicks (like E7's V node shortcut). We've done these phases before and proved ourselves capable of beating them, no need to revisit the boss nodes again. Though to be fair, the requirements weren't exactly difficult for most of it this time around, barring the FAST+ equipment check in E4 M3. What else do you have to say? Brought Nelson to E7 last dance kill, but it didn't trigger because Nelson got chuuhaed. Still managed to kill the remaining boss and one BBH in night battle with a good friend fleet and full healthy team of TCI escorts. So I actually brought Nelson, but didn't use her Touch. The event felt VERY monotonous to me. That might be because I cleared E6-3 and E7-5 in one try. Definitely felt there were too many phases in some maps penis1. The numerous new mechanics in the last few months certainly adds more choices when planning a fleet, though that may be overwhelming. I am feeling uneasy about RE being slowly being an essentials on many ships to have a decent shot at clearing a map without gimping oneself. What else do you have to say? I honestly loved this event. Again an early map being brutally hard on hard difficulty, in this case E1, it was very funny. The duration was also very nice, allowing for vacation trip in the middle of the event and still having more than enough time to enjoy. EO was very immersive, at some point on E7 it really felt like I was performing a landing invasion. Very happy with everything in general. Many new shipgirls! Debuff/shortcut gimmicks only needed A ranks. A lot of shiplocks were reused. Fortified Pillbox Princess art looks very cool, while also not being too strong in game. What did you hate about the Event? E-1H was way too hard for a 1st map, plus rewards were a bit meh. E-4 shortcut and debuff required both Fast+ and speed change en route, making it a very high requirement. Some preboss nodes were pretty BS too, requiring smoke for a decent pass rate. E-7 was way too long and resource consuming. Shiplocks were on the high side. Only had about a week forewarning before the event ended. What else do you have to say? Completed HNHNNNN. My entire event was kinda ruined by farming for Salmon who refused to drop. Several dozen S ranks in E-2 got me multiple Noshiros, Tanikazes and Yukikazes, and even a dupe Asahi, but no Salmon. Because of that I had to do the EOs on N (I was Salmon farming while waiting for EO information) to make sure I had enough resources to finish the event. Even then it got a bit hairy, lucky thing Javelin and Cappeloli dropped pretty quickly during post-clear farming (No 22 dropped during clearing). Also imo this event had a few missed opportunities. You would we would get the M4A1 DD (I missed out on getting it the first time) for an event based on the Normandy landings, but nope we get more Daihatsus and Panzers. This would also have been a perfect event for No 101, but she gets no bonuses. The final boss of E-6 is her abyssal form, so it is not as though Tanaka forgot she exists. So what gives? I do appreciate that the Shinzan gets a bonus though, even if I didn't use it.

This is the first time I've actually farmed resources seriously during events, dunno why I didn't do it before, probably out off fear for the need of support expeditions would arise while no fleet was available, but that farm helped me alot it would have been absolutely impossible to complete the event without all those extra resources. Considering that in the past running out of resources in the final maps was a serious issue this practice will be a big boost for my event performance going forward. Also the first time probably when I was able to, albeit not for long, farm ships post-clear. Also a fellow player decided out of the goodness of their hearth to help me with the event and also give me tips for the game in general, without his help I probably wouldn't be able to clear the event at the difficulties that I did.

The rewards for each event maps is quite decent (minus E7 rewards, it was too much work for a few equips) for the difficulty. This event do utilize most of the auxilliary ships that you kept for a long time in the docks and is a welcome change. Drops are quite decent as well for the size of the event. While airstrike node do appear on this event, it's not a huge threat now and usually appear if you use different route/fleets What did you hate about the Event? Entire E7 map. The effort you put in there against the reward you get is bad overall. Probably good for FCM and admirals who like challenge but for regular players, it was horrendous. Ne-class Kai summer is still a pain to dealt with, plus buff imps to seriously hamper your damage dealing to enemy fleets. What else do you have to say? I do quite like the Main Ops for this event. Not too hard but not too easy either. I do wish they don't make too much enemies that need a certain gimmick to beat them (looking at you Imps) and need a certain ships to counter them properly. I actually pretty like the utilization of the anti-Installation now, not that hard when compared to last event where SDH gain a stupidly high evasion for no f reason. The last event I participated in was the Summer 2022 event, and I hadn't touched my KanColle account since. For reference, I've played KC since the Summer 2017 Event. Akagi is my first and (currently) only waifu, the New Submarine Princess was my first boss flaship kill, and (unironically) ASW is some of the strongest kit my fleet can bring to a fight in terms of quality and numbers. While my equipment selection could use improvement, and I have only a pair of all-hard FCMs to my name, I do enjoy having a vast majority of my fleet collection complete, and I have a solid history of clearing events. I started this event with 100k+ in Fuel, Ammo, and Steel, 50k+ in Bauxite, and 300+ Instant Repairs. I also had 350+ Instant Finishers and 2 Blueprints, with a 3rd available in Medals if needed. E-1H While E-7 was long, and at times difficult, I personally believe E-1 was the most challenging map this event. It's a real departure from the difficulty levels of most E-1 maps before, and makes it it's own strange phenomenon. Not having access to LBAS, or effective Special Attacks of any kind, forced me to field shelling support expeditions which amplified the resource drain early on. However, as painful as each of those failed LD attempts felt in the moment, the Hard difficulty rewards would pay off big-time later on. E-2E and E-3N I decided to tone down the difficulty through the next two maps. The rewards didn't seem worth the higher difficulty effort, and I wanted to conserve my resources for the EO maps. Enjoyed putting my new Hayabusa Model III (Skilled/20th Squadron) to work bullying on the E-3 part 2 New Submarine Princess - almost an event tradition for my ship-girls at this point. E-4N Part 2 of this map was surprisingly difficult than it looks like at face value - definitely the next skill wall in the 7-map journey after E-1H. Struggled with my CTF comp for this phase since I was holding back many of my better ships for the EOs - and considering this tag was reused in E-6 and E-7, maybe I made some strategic mistakes in my planning here. Picking up the Smoke Generator Kai from E-1 really paid off here, helping my escort fleet sneak past that brutal submarine node J. Lost a chunk of bauxite to this map, but strong LBAS and CVCI hits carried the day. E-5H This was the only other map besides E-1 I really felt capapble of going Hard on, and still having the resources needed to clear the entire event. I don't remember any one part of this map posing my ship-girls any really challenging problems. However, everything was chonky and difficult to completely clear out. Working through the boss fleet HP bar was a tedious process, and when it came down to LD with debuffs in place, it took a good opening of LBAS coupled with Akagi, Shokaku, Hornet, and Victorious achieving CVCI crits to cut through all that Abyssal princess HP and sink the flagship for the clear. Like E-1, the Hard clear was worth the effort. Nevada is a cute and kind secretary, and her 14in/45 gun mounts and the Walrus were used extensively clearing E-6 and E-7. E-6N Honestly, even on Normal difficulty, I expected this map to put up more of a challenge than what my ship-girls and I faced. Initally I was trying to go for a Normal clear so I could pick up the Panzer III J, and I spent the remainder of the map waiting for the skill wall that would force me back to Easy, but it never came. Debuffing the boss seemed like the most challenging part of this map, and the awkwardness of running four AVs/LHAs in the same CTF aside, even sinking the flagship on LD wasn't that difficult. Overall enjoyable map, if expecting a little more. E-7C This map took me the longest amount of time to clear by far, and it had a healthy habit of nickel-and-diming my Bauxite reserves at every turn. Initally my plan was to attempt Normal, and drop to Easy if necessary. However, by phase 4 my bauxite and instant repairs were so depleted that it became a race to see which would hit bottom first. Couple the insta-repair/bauxite drain with node U and final-day-of-the-event problems, I was forced to drop to Casual in order to clear in time. That Sea Otter and Action Report could've been nice to have, but Rodney was the real reason to clear this map on any difficulty besides Hard. Overall, a good large-scale KanColle event. I walked away with some new ship-girls and a handful of happy returns - including a duplicate Atlanta. I'm looking forward to the next event, and being more prepared resource-wise.
