Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2022 Summer Event Evalution!

Actually this is the Summer/Early Fall Event Survey Evaluation, the devs sneaked in the fact that the EO was the Early Fall event which i missed when naming the survey. Thank you all for participating and sharing!

The survey closed on 18.10.2022 20:00:00 CEST. A total of 354 people sent in replies, with the majority (55%) sourcing it from various discord server announcements, while the rest got it from reddit (36%) and other sources (9%).

The plots and accompanying commentary are arranged in galleries this time. Please click through them to see all images. It is recommended to look at the evaluation through a desktop browser.

Event Overview

(1/5) While close to 80% of survey participants cleared the event, there has been a significant amount of people who have not reached their own set goals for this event (35%). The official clear rate this Event was said to be 71% this event, so keep a surveybase with higher engagement than the regular playerbase in mind when reading this evaluation.
(2/5)Mirroring official clear rates the most commonly picked difficulty on all maps was hard. E6 seemed to be the map that would have the biggest increase of people not finishing the event.
(3/5)The rewards were mostly perceived as adequate, except for E1 being perceived as too much effort for them. Furthermore, survey participants choosing lower difficulties on E3 and E6 were more inclined to be unsatisfied with the rewards given.
(4/5)Friend FLeets have been used by the majority of players, most noteably starting from E3. E6 hard mode players would often forgo Friend Fleets entirely and clear the event without them instead.
(5/5)The event would accrue a rating of 6.3, putting it between Fall/Winter Event 2020 (5.8) and Rainy/Summer Event 2020 (6.4) since starting these surveys.

Newcomer Review

(1/3) Without a doubt, Ranger has won over most admirals with her aesthetics (praise the Buns). There was no close second, the only outlier for the remaining ships is Natsugumo being about half as popular as the rest.
(2/3) When it came to assessing the usefulness in upcoming content, it is mostly an even split between Ranger and Langley, with a strong third place by Massachusetts. In retrospect, the options "can't decide" and "none" should have been split in this question, as it was the second most commonly picked answer with both parts of it meaning widely different things.
(3/3) As usual, the guaranteed reward ships have been acquired by most survey participants. In terms of ships that needed to be dropped, the acquisition rate hovered between 50% and 65% for them.

(1/1) Ranger, we meet again. Her abyssal form also won over the most, this time however with the Incomplete Battleship Princess being a close second.

(Touch) Girls und Panzer

(1/4) The Yamato-Class special attack would be the favoured one used in this phase, with pretty much all who did medium and above choosing it, with the Nagato-Class being a distant second.
(2/4) Unsurprisingly this trend would continue onto E5 as it shared the same lock, although hard mode admirals would choose non-Yamato-class more often (but still rarely) here.
(3/4) The final boss would almost equally be handled by Yamato and the Nagato-class Special attack with Nelson being a distant second. There has been a non-insignificant portion of hard mode admirals on this map that utilized a duplicate Yamato to clear this phase (While not specifically asked for in the survey, this data has been obtained by filtering for survey participants who selected H on E6 and already used Yamato on E5)

The difficulty spike on MO definitely took me by suprise and I had to settle with Normal clear on some maps that otherwise would have cleared on Hard. While EO has a fair share of difficulty problem even on Normal, its not that painful to clear without proper debuff. Heres hoping the next event would be easier, at least on Normal while let all the hard part on Hard'

'Given how underprepared I was I took this opportunity to make a experiment out of this event. My main conclusion from this is that these events are either a case of you devote time or you devote money into making your fleet as good as possible to clear it on the highest difficulty. If you dont have that kind of mindset and know the risk and cost opportunities youre putting into playing this game you will be left behind. Number of locks, number of phases, lengthy TP phases, almost every phases require support expedition, unkillable enemy with capped shelling power even in red-T in pre-boss nodes, E6H preboss nodes and finally, the amount of time require to complete the event is way too much. What else do you have to say? 'I hate this event. This event took the same amount of resources as the last summer event(2021) which is considered the worst event in my entire career(Starting from Early Fall 2018). The amount of shiplocks and gimmicks are insane and I have to wait for the info on E6 to complete before I can even start E1 and that leave me about 3 weeks to complete the event. While that may looked long enough. But in the end, I only managed to complete the event with only a day to spare despite having 3 weeks. The event is too long and tedious, the TP gauges are too long, pre-boss nodes are too much in early maps without using support(sparking support fleet is taking a lot of time and its not fun), unkillable TP bosses also become a norm which is even worse given how long the TP gauge is. Unlocking become tedious with the newly introduced Wo-Class with a boss class HP forcing you to deploy the heavier ships just for a single node unlock in this tag ridden event. Finally, this event almost making me quitting this game due to how its become too tedious and timesink. No matter how many good equipment I got from clearing all hard mode maps or from ranking, the events do not seem to be any easier. I would be content if its a bit easier or at least stay the same but in the end, the newer events become harder despite all my effort putting into the game. If the next event is gonna hold the same pattern I may call it quit eventually. It is just not fun anymore.'

Honestly, this doesnt bode well for the game if they continue with this kind of event where you literally go bankrupt in terms of resources and time.'

Collecting both a F4U-2 Night Corsair, and a Skilled Aviation Personnel + Aviation Maintenance Hands from E-2H was a generous reward for the effort, and enabled me to field a night-capable CVCI on Ryuuhou at E-3, and walk away from the event with x2 SAP+AMH and x10 Skilled Aviation Personnel for improving both of them. The F4U-4 and AU-1 are very good fighter-bombers, and the Mosquitos are great Land-based aircraft, crucial for clearing the latter maps. What did you hate about the Event? 'The difficulty spikes at LD and between Hard/Normal on E-1 and E-5, and Normal/Easy on E-6 were enormous! And while I enjoyed the puzzle solving that was E-5 P4, E-6 P3, and E-6 P4 LD, the necessary solutions were very unconventional. I wouldnt expect a regular player, much less a newbie just starting out, to handle these challenges well without some intricate know-how and a solid ship/equipment lineup.' What else do you have to say? This was my 5th anniversary event! I love Langley, Brooklyn, Ranger, and Jean Bart, as well as the Skilled Deck Personnel, and Corsair and Mosquito aircraft variants my fleet brought home! I completed the event (5 minutes before server maintenance!), but I wish I had started clearing maps much sooner than I did.

The difficulty, aside from a few spikes, was generally quite fair; All of the maps were challenging in their own right, but nothing felt absolutely unfair aside from a handful of unlocks and one phase. I wish I could claim to have pulled an all-Hard clear, since this is the type of event where that would be a major accomplishment but not down to pure luck. Also transport phases where we fight installations are always really fun. What did you hate about the Event? Primarily E1 Node J and E5 Node I, also E5-P2. I have pretty solid anti-installation equipment, but these were just ridiculous. E5-I especially- a very limited single fleet against two sub nodes a surface node and an air raid, and then a really nasty installation node? Ridiculous. What else do you have to say? 'I really need to work on being proactive- I didnt catch that Arill wasnt going to be making any more guides in the Discord so I basically sat around twiddling my thumbs waiting for them and had to rush to clear E5 and E6. I managed the former on Hard, if with a painful 600 bckets on a single map and had to admit that a 24-hour Hard clear of E6 wasnt going to happen. A 10-hour Medium clear was, though; was actually easier than E1H. Rather annoyed at myself for missing out on the F4U-7, but Ill survive. Otherwise, I really liked this event aside from no Royal Navy girls.'

Excluding the topics touched upon in other questions, I had a few more thoughts about this event: There were several attempts made to improve existing mechanics and enhance quality of life this event. While some where successful in my opinion (e.g. plane bonuses being much more intuitive, bonus planes being substantially more accessible, gimmick nodes being highlighted on map), I felt that several fell short (or were poorly/prematurely implemented) - for instance, new locking rules may have had the potential to be an important failsafe for accidental sorties, but the way it was implemented just complicated routing rules instead. On a brighter note, the balancing of dupes (particularly that of touch ships, most notably Yamato) seemed to be headed in a good direction – by having both of the difficult and straightforward surface bosses (E3P2, E5P4) share a lock, players were able to comfortably commit YamaSushi to these fights, with other bosses balanced in such a way that fleets with other touches (or no touch at all) could still reasonably clear. In particular, while a Yamato dupe was still preferred for E6P4, she was by no means a hard requirement, as the fight was balanced in such a way that Nelson or NagaMutsu were still viable, and penalties were applied to fleets with Yamato to keep her in check. While it’s hard to say for sure that devs will continue in this direction (since this is only the first event after Yamato K2’s debut), they seem to be handling Yamato dupes well enough for the time being. While this did not affect me as I cleared on Hard, several maps appeared to have some balancing issues on lower difficulties – several maps seemed disproportionately difficult, raising the entry barrier for newer players. While a major part of this was due to heavy installation presence, lower difficulties during this event seemed more difficult than usual as a whole. Overall, I still had fun with this event and appreciate that devs are attempting to improve mechanics, but found this event to be underwhelming as a whole. At least it did bring a new waifu in Renja.
