"SOund Navigation And Ranging", SONARs. By observing sound waves underwater, they can detect anomalies like other ships, including submarines. They function either "actively", through producing sound and observing the echoes produced; or "passively", by picking up whatever sounds are produced natively. In the game, the active/passive distinction is only meaningful for Saury fishing.
