If the enemy combined fleet hasn't been defeated in the day battle, you can choose to purse them and enter night battle. During the night battle phase, most of the rules that pertain to night battle remain the same with one small exception: if the '''Enemy Escort Fleet Flagship''' has survived day battle, the '''Enemy Escort Fleet''' will participate in night battle '''in place of the main enemy fleet'''. Otherwise, if the '''Enemy Escort Fleet Flagship''' has been defeated, the escort fleet will not participate in night battle and the main fleet will be faced as per normal.

If the enemy combined fleet has not been defeated in the day, you may choose to purse them and enter night battle. The key difference is that depending on whether a few conditions have been fulfilled, the enemy escort fleet may participate in night battle '''in place of the main enemy fleet''', thus preventing any further damage from being done to the main fleet.

 

The following list of conditions is known to cause the enemy escort fleet to be faced instead of the main fleet, note that this list is not necessarily exhaustive:

 

* If the enemy escort fleet flagship has survived with at least yellow health, and ''at least one other escort'' has also survived

* If at least three enemy escort ships have survived in yellow health or better

* If the entire enemy main fleet has been defeated (n.b. this is of little practical impact, except where S ranks are concerned)
