In November 20th, 1942, a Japanese destroyer force led by Rear Admiral Raizou Tanaka attempted to deliver supplies to the Japanese ground forces stationed at Guadacanal. however on that night, they were intercepted by several American force of cruisers and destroyers. Despite being outnumbered and caught in an ambush, the Japanese forces were able to take down one US cruiser and damage 3 others while losing one destroyer in the fight.
