In November 20th, 1942, the Japanese destroyer forces lead by Rear Admiral Raizou Tanaka attempted to deliver to the Japanese forces stationed at Guadacanal, however on that night, they intercepted by several American ships that mainly consisted of Cruiser and Destroyers. Even though they were heavily out numbered, the Japanese forces were able to take down one US cruiser and damage 3 others while the Japanese would end up losing one destroyer in the fight.
Even though the Japanese were able to take down several of the larger ships, they were unsuccessful as delivering the food supplies.

Late in the war, the 31st Squadron (Also known as 31st Cruiser Division) was made to help with anti submarine patrols during the late part of WWII. Doing various operations around the fronts of Taiwan to the Philippines and the finally within Leyte Gulf. The crew mainly focused on sweeping for submarines but would later be engaging in combat and transport related tasks.
