*A further development of the ''Fubuki''-class she was laid down 17th Feb 1930, Launched two years later May 7th and commissioned into serviced on 15th November.
*Little service of note during the '30s aside from a collision with ''I-6'', with only minor damage done, and some patrols off China.
*She began the war with the covering forces for the Malaya and Dutch East Indies campaigns, during this she engaged USS Permit, though without success. Follwing this she took part in the Aleutians campaign though this mostly just involved patrols.
*As the situation in the south deteriorated in October she was assigned to the 'Tokyo Express' runs through the Solomans. On October 25th she, ''[[Ikazuchi]]'' and ''[[Shiratsuyu]]'' took part in an offensive sweep off Guadalcanal, damaging the coverted ''Clemson''-class ''USS Zane'' and sinking tug ''USS Seminole'' and a patrol boat.
* She was present at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal where as part of a bombardment group they stumbled into a US force of destroyers and cruisers. She made the unfortunate, though technically correct decision, to turn on her searchlight and illuminate the enemy, lighting up the ''USS Atlanta'' - however being the first ship to light up she became a target for the entire US force and was swiftly sunk with most of her crew.
