Think of them as evolutions. You can remodel a ship at any point after it reaches the required level, and you need the previous remodel in order to get the next.
Example: Chitose -> Chitose Kai -> Chitose A -> Chitose Carrier -> Chitose Carrier Kai -> Chitose Carrier Kai 2
