The plane is from the 252 squadron which was originally based in the Solomons. They were veteran airmen who fought in the area until their dwindled. They were then called back to the mainland and were reconstituted into a composite air group with other surviving air units. They were sent to fight in Iwo Jima and the last remnants were sent for special attack operations which led to the entire unit being wiped out.
