* She is named after the Kuma River (球磨川, Kuma-gawa), a river in Kumamoto Prefecture, "Kuma" also meaning bear.
* She was launched on the 14th of July 1919.
* Torpedoed by HMS Tally-Ho northwest of Penang on the 11th of January 1944.
* Wreck located in March 2004; she lay on her starboard side at a depth of only 47 meters (155 feet) and was covered in fishing nets and snagged fishing lines. In 2014 the wreck was a victim of illegal salvage and has almost completely disappeared.
