Before the operation was to commence the American Navy successfully deciphered the coded messages of the IJN and were able to anticipate the upcoming attack and launched thier Navy Fleet (Consisting of Enterprise and Lexington as part of thier fleet.)to intercept the Carrier Task Force and engage in a long battle which would have a great impact on the later part of WWII.
When the Japanese confront the American force and commenced the Battle of the Coral Sea, the following Japanese ships partook in the battle during both the Tulagi's invasion and the Battle of the Coral Sea:

The long battle resulted in Japan taking out Lexington, and several other ships, but at the same time Shouhou was lost and Shoukaku was badly damaged while Zuikaku lost most of her planes in the battle, resulting in the remain carriers to fall back for repairs. This would have a drastic impact that later Battle of Midway.
