Hello everynyan and welcome to the 2024 Early Spring Event Evalution!

Thank you all for participating and sharing!

The survey closed on 11:00 CEST 16.04.2024. A total of 297 people sent in replies, with the majority (54%) sourcing it from various discord server announcements, while the rest got it from reddit (39%) and other sources.

Event Overview

(1/5) While more than 85% of survey participants cleared the event, there has been a significant amount of people who have not reached their own set goals for this event (28%). The official clear rate this Event was said to be 73% this event, so keep a surveybase with higher engagement than the regular playerbase in mind when reading this evaluation.
(2/5)Mirroring official clear rates the most commonly picked difficulty on all maps was hard. E3 seemed to be the map that would have the most people not choosing the highest difficulty.
(3/5)The rewards were mostly perceived as adequate to good on the first two maps, with a higher leaning towards "too bad" on E3 and a more balanced approach on E4.
(4/5)Friend Fleets haven't been used by the majority of players, and those who did, were more likely to start using them in the later stages of the event.
(5/5)The event would accrue an average rating of 6.3, trailing behind Summer 2023 with a rating of 6.8

Newcomer Review

(1/2) Out of the new girls in the Event, I-36 took the crown, being followed by Drum. Heian Maru also got a following, while I-41 seems to be left in the dust.
(2/2) When it came to assessing the usefulness in upcoming content, none were deemed particularly useful.

(1/1) While the American DD Hime would be a pain point later on in the text replies, she managed to get a close second place in front of the new CV Hime, however both are overshadowed by the Atoll hime. Just like her shipgirl counterpart, the I-go hime did not seem to have been too popular.

Map Details

(1/7) Only a select few would constuct additional T4 tanks for purposes of clearing this event.
(2/7) Players were rather concentrating their T4 tanks on a few ships instead of spreading them out over the entire fleet.
(3/7) Submarine Touch usage was middling and didnt seem to be mandatory in any of the phases. In retrospect this question should have been asked for each submarine phase individually, rather than getting a blanket statement for the entire event.
(4/7) Unsurprisingly, those who could use arctic decks, would use them to great effect in E1. It remains to be answered if those who were forced to sortie without them would have chosen a higher difficulty if they had them.
(5/7) E3P1 would mostly see STFs with Yamato and Nagato at the helm, with a higher portion of Yamato on the hard. Carrier task forces or touchless fleets were not popular.
(6/7) E4P1 would also be dominated by Yamato-Comps, with regular carrier task forces making up a little bit less than half of the volume of them. Other comps were not popular.
(7/7) The most common final LD kill would be happening during daytime main fleet shelling (probably due to the 4 slot CL concentration and 2 shelling phases of that fleet), with the escort fleet mopping up at night being the second most common result. A not insignificant portion would also clear via OASW or Friend Fleet (those in the NA column that arent coloured red).

Misc Notes

Here's what wasnt interesting enough to be a graph:

1 Person (0,3%, Answer 126) picked the Dev Mats instead of the SJ Radar for the E3 choice reward
Those who had the choice, would rather pick the Ne Engines and F4U-4 rather than the other reward
No dupes, no FF and Waifu FS were very common picks for self-imposed challenges (~60 people or 20% of the participants for each option)
The LD finishers were quite diverse in name this time around, but most were 4 slot cruisers. About 11% of all survey participants cleared via Friend Fleet. One person put "I-36" there, wonder how that worked
E2 got debuffed by around a third of all survey participants, E3 by a bit less than half. Only 10 (3%) people went through the effort of debuffing E4
For E4P3 preboss strats: Vanguard was more popular than Line Ahead, less people used smoke than didn't and Node Support was widely utilized

This event was kinda insane, is nice to finally see more use for the Submarine Girls but at the same time i feel like the current combat mechanics keep making them unreliable, there have been nodes where the RNG is very heavy and is just matter of keep trying for getting a small opening, not surprise that the most rsc people have spend in the event have been E3 and E4, trully a battle of atrittion. On another note i would like to talk about the new shipgirls, i feel like we got the best when it comes to submarine designs, ironically Shibafu's take on Subs feel the most unispiried in comparison to Yoshinori and Hoshi which is something i wouldnt havent expected till this event, overall i enjoyed the challenge even if almost lost my sanity, this is my first full Hard event since Scamp Event, so you can see how i was easy lure by the fact the final boss was a submarine, what a hell of a LD was that, in any case im looking forward to more American Submarines, hopefully we get the legendary Hawkbill and Harder so the early jokes about IJN shipgirls losing their water discharge would come back. Also Drum is a one hell of a thicc cookie. Btw her hair is so weird to draw, is fascinating and kinda frustrating to get, kinda like Sheffield's but this is one is ten times more complicated. In any case Drum is probably the most unique submarine we have been getting character designwise.

The execution of involving submarines felt like it would be a one-event thing given how the event is themed around Operation Tatsumaki. Much like QTE LBAS back in Winter 2022. Though I could be wrong in the next events that C2 would plan out next. What else do you have to say? BGM is a real eye-opener, especially with the first boss theme; It felt like a sort of "return to form" with KanColle around the transitional period of 2015-2017

Rewards for E3/E4 on Hard felt especially lackluster for the effort put in. Submarine phases on E3P3 and E4P3 were straight up unfun and felt like total whalebait for impulse-buying Mamirakos/damegami/sub materials. Getting half of your (very fragile) fleet wrecked before you reach the boss with no counter other than pure RNG, and getting wrecked even further at the boss itself, is not fun. Nodes like E4 C & V where you pretty much just smoke & pray got annoying after a while. E4HP3 farming was barely viable. A bit light on rewards. Overall this event was very good to me, not only did I clear rather cleanly I also was able to avenge my greatest event failure (Winter 2017) by finally getting I-14 and I-13. E-2 was also kind to me as I got Heian Maru on the 1st S-rank at node Y and got Massachusetts on the last LD Fail. Other prizes from framing E-2 include Intrepid, I-400, dupe Taiho, dupe Massachusetts, dupe Heyward L. Edwards, dupe Washington, a pair of Maruyas and 3 DEs. on 49 framing runs. I also crafted 2 addition Type 4 tanks post clear for a total of 4 normal and 2 kai T4 tanks to assist in farming E-2. My entire event run was streamed and archived on Twitch for those who wish to see any of the run I did during the Event. - CodRaven1728 on KC, Discord, and Twitch.

Most importantly, the fact that in spite of being a "submarine-focused" event set in the Pacific, U-511/Ro-500 was completely unavailable anywhere in the event, yet British capital ships and the worthless Italian from last event were both dropping. What else do you have to say? Could not progress beyond E2P2 due to getting too many rare drops that I did not feel comfortable scrapping. Deeply dislike Drum's design and I-41's voice, and probably wouldn't have kept them even if I obtained them. Most of all - the most popular (by fanart) submarine in the game wasn't included in the "submarine focused" event, 0/10 would never touch it again.

Here I was thinking the game was becoming more noob friendly with Shinden kais being given out as rewards, Nonaka being available, et al. Tanaka really went "Sike [redacted] you thought" with this, pulling a no bitches meme but "no sub supply mats?" on them. Can't really blame him for trying to make submarines more relevant other than ranking map damage sinks, so good idea, unfortunately terrible execution, sasuga tanaka. Other than that, not a very interesting event.If I were more into the 18+ side of fanart, Drum would likely be my favorite. As it is, cute potato is cute (so is Mimu, but I love my potatoes). By the way, resources spent are rounded off to the nearest hundred, and I may be one off on my sub supply materials used count.

The first map was a great improvement compared to the previous event. Seems that if you were new or unable to get more than the 1 free Arctic gear, you were so out of luck for that one. Interesting that the rewards were actually worth it for use in this event rather than doing diddly squat until after the event. It was nice to get another AAR DB for the US CVs. Plus I did get the remaining BB I missed out on (Big Mamie). What did you hate about the Event? The stupid requirement of using sub-optimal ships to do the entire event. If you didn't have high end levelled SS/SSVs, you were fucking screwed. Plus, over reliance on a touch attack on a ship with shit stats and luck is not enjoyable to have. E3 rewards was very questionable given the reliance of luck to kill said boss and only a US sub radar being the reward sucked donkey's balls. What else do you have to say? Overall, I feel that this event was a drag due to the amount of subs you had to bring and if you didn't have X sub like I-13, I-14 etc, you were literally boned. Even more so if you didn't have high level subs as well. I really hope that we do not get any more of this kind of event focused on ONE type of ship any more.

While this event was more manageable than the past several extra-large-scale events, it still had several major problems that were still not addressed nor acknowledged by the developers. I do not approve of map unlocking mechanics and gimmicks; all they do is create unnecessary padding and overcomplicate ship lock planning. Additionally, multiple map phases make maps look unnecessarily confusing and cluttered; event maps need to go back to the “one map, one ship lock, one boss, one gauge” setup. Additionally, make Friend Fleets available immediately from the start of the event. Delaying them until an unknown time one week before the event’s end is disrespectful of a player’s time; a player has a life outside of the game and can’t plan when to play if they do not know when the event is scheduled to end. The event’s primary gimmick, the submarine-focused fleet with a submarine tender, is one of the worst ideas ever conceived for this game. In each phase that required its use, there was nothing the Admiral could do to mitigate any threats along the way to the boss node. It did not matter if your submarines were fully sparkled or not; they would always get shot to taiha regardless of how damaged the attacking enemy ship was. This also ruined the typical strategy of sending submarines to avoid getting hit by airstrike nodes. This useless fleet gimmick needs to be thrown in the trash with regenerating health bars and never be used ever again. I do not see the special Type 4 tanks having any use outside of this specific useless fleet setup. If you truly want players to deploy functionally useless combat ships like submarine tenders, fleet oilers, etc., design the maps in such a way that actually gives them the ability to survive to a boss node, rather than making it as unfair as possible. Regarding the event’s final boss, even though it was simple to go all in on ASW and air power for the win, every kill never felt like an actual win. Yes, the boss flagship was straightforward to kill with overwhelming ASW power, but that was always at the expense of leaving every other ship alive. The final boss node set your buckets on fire, and it was demoralizing to see 10 out of 12 ship girls shot to taiha on every successful boss node visit. I had no desire to do any sort of drop farming due to the continuing problem of not-final-boss nodes having abysmal drop rates and high rates of no-drop. If you want players to actually enjoy an event, make it so every single boss node is realistically farmable, regardless of whether it’s the “last” one or not. Overall, this event was tolerable, but is still riddled with multiple critical issues that have driven away many veteran players and keep away potential players.

The biggest challenge was navigating through 11 locks that saw fairly limited re-use, which was fine. Just for some reason, I had little/no motivation to get started...though once I did, I pushed through with little difficulty (I needed guidance for E4P1, but that's about it). I'm liking the artwork for the girls, and some of them seem kind of fun, so I'm not sure why I felt 'meh' this time around.

Submarine mechanics are probably the least developed portion of the game and this event shows it. E3P3 was imo the frustrating phase of the event for me. Hot take maybe, but I found this phase worse than E3P1 or E4P1. Both support expeditions and LBAS are a must and even then it is a coin flip with how many OASW enemies there are on both boss and pre-boss. Doesn't help that Submarine Touch is a trap. With so many OASW enemies it is very easy to fail the requirements. And even if it does proc, your subs need to be lvl 75+ for it to be worth gimping your fleet with Echelon formation instead of using Line Ahead. Waited for FF in the hopes that E3P3 would get a Friend Fleet, but nope. I did manage to clear without FF but by that time my enthusiasm for the rest of the event had all but evaporated. Lucky that I-36 and Heian Maru dropped during clearing, because this was the first event where I didn't have any motivation to do post-clear farming. Clearing the final LD was literally the last time I played the event. I give this event a meh rating mostly because of E3P3.

The point is that subs in game are modelled like surface ships that take different damage from equips, essentially. Now alright, WWII subs were essentially surface ships that could also submerge, so that's fair, but it makes for a mediocre experience in game: for the enemy ones, you either have "normal" subs with 10-50HP, essentially 1-hit-kills, or those dumb abyss subs with triple digits HP that make no sense whatsoever. We need a real rework of sub mechanics with detection, noise, etc., essentially like Cold War submarine operations worked, even though our subs are older. And for our subs, this still resulted in a really crappy experience since if enemies has ASW, our subs are wet paper barges relying on taiha protection and God's blessing, essentially. Now to be fair this is a realistic representation of WWII era submarines, but so would be getting diarrhea at sea. Also, the Special Sub Touch requiring P2W consumables is a really crappy move. Yes, you can F5 it but it's still a very bad signal. All in all, easy event but poorly designed. Girls didn't impress either.
