複葉の九六艦爆から一新、単葉の近代的な艦上爆撃機として登場した「九九艦爆」。 固定脚の低速機ではありましたが、「九七艦攻」と共に初期の機動部隊の攻撃隊戦力の中核を担いました。 後期改良機の二二型ではエンジンを換装、主に速度などの性能向上を図ります。 既に旧式であることは否めませんが、本艦爆隊は、熟練搭乗員で構成された精鋭九九艦爆隊です。

''The Type 99 was introduced as a modern monoplane replacement for the "Type 96 Biplane". Although it was a slow aircraft with fixed landing gear, it formed the core of the attack squadrons along with the "Type 97 Torpedo Bomber" in the early days of the carrier task forces. In its upgrade to the model 22 in the latter stages of the war, its engine was replaced to improve speed. It is undeniably obsolete, but this elite Type 99 squadron is crewed by skilled pilots.
