While probably the weakest submarine in the submarine family, Maruyu is strongly sought after by admirals due to the fact that she is currently the only ship that provides luck when used for Modernization. Those who manage to collect many copies should consider training them to level 20 to upgrading to Kai to increase amount of luck she bestows to the ship lucky enough to consume her. Since luck boosts the chance a ship will execute a night battle cut-in and also trigger a small increase in critical hit probabilities and evasion, players will want to collect many Maruyu over the course of their career.

Maruyu is only found via LSC, as well as a few maps. However, she is also known to appear quite frequently on event maps.

Even though Maruyu is used as luck fodder, this does not mean that she does not have her uses in battle. Thanks to the fact that most enemy units in the normal part of the game can rarely instant crit a sub once they're fully modernized, Maruyu can be used to usually tank a hit or two before she is in high need of repair. Further more, her repair time frame is among the shortest of all ships making her useful for helping along with Orel cruising, power training, and so forth since she can be brought back into battle in a short period of time.

Notes
  −
*When used as modernization material, Maruyu can increase Luck stat by 1.2, while Maruyu Kai increases Luck by 1.6. Result will be rounded down after adding random number below 1. You can still increase a maxed-out ship's luck through modernization.
  −
*You should use more than one ship to take advantage of the decimals. The best possible outcome is to use 5 Maruyu Kai, so the result will be a +8 to Luck with no possibility of failure. For more info, see Modernization#Luck.
  −
*Lowest consumption, and lowest hp in the game.  Unremodeled form only consumes 5 ammo (remodeled at 10 ammo).  This makes it very useful for expeditions.  This also makes it very efficient as a tank for farming maps like 3-2A.
  −
*While she is generally useless in battle, she can often be the difference in a victory for difficult maps, due to her ability to take shots meant for other subs, as well as having extra ships factoring positively when calculating victory/defeat results ratios that yield B vs C rank.
  −
* In the Arcade Version, a Maruyu card can grant a luck bonus to all ships if her card is scanned into play.

Trivia
Trivia
*She is a very unique submarine because she was designed and operated by the Imperial Japanese Army.
+
*She was designed and built by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) instead of the Navy to resupply isolated garrisons in the Pacific.
*She calls herself Maruyu. This comes from the circle "", which is read as "Maru", and the hiragana character "ゆ" which is read as "yu".  Also, the character ゆ inside the character 〇 resembles a fish in a fishbowl. Fitting for a sub.
+
*Her name "Maruyu" comes from the designation given by the IJA. Written as "" for "Maru" and "ゆ" for "Yu". The "Yu" in her name being short for "Yusouyou", meaning "Transporter".
 +
**The character ゆ inside the character 〇 resembles a fish in a fishbowl. Fitting for a sub.
 +
*Unlike other ships in the game, she is meant to represent her entire class of 38 ships.
