|When Itakura was in command of I-2, he and some of the crew decided to get rid of all of the liquor onboard by drinking it after some water damage to the sub. Those who couldn’t drink were asked to keep watch and prevent anyone from getting onto the deck for safety. Itakura decided to come up to check for himself and then fell into the freezing water while attempting to urinate. Nearly dying, he was successfully resuscitated. When the crew of Heian Maru noticed the commotion and signaled to check (イカニサレシヤ), Itakura replied:
