''The "Zero Fighter Model 52C" was the last mass-produced variant of the Zero. Its armaments and armor have been upgraded in exchange for some mobility. The "Hachiman Squadron" was formed and deployed to Iwo Jima to attack and destroy enemy carriers from the air. Faced with overwhelming numbers of US carrier aircraft, it was destroyed without offering much resistance.

The plane is from the 252 squadron which was originally based in the Solomons. They were veteran airmen who fought in the area until their numbers dwindled. They were then called back to the mainland and were reconstituted into a composite air group with other surviving air units. They were sent to fight in Iwo Jima and the last remnants were sent for special attack operations which led to the entire unit being wiped out.
