* Named after Dutch national hero Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. He is renowned for several victories, especially in overcoming the joint English and French forces in the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
* She was launched on the 11th of March 1935.
* Sunk by torpedo in the Java Sea on the 28th of February 1942
* Wreck located by specialist divers on 1 December 2002; it has since been illegally salvaged, with all traces of it disappearing from the seabed.
