Shiranui's unit, DesDiv 18, was crippled by just four torpedoes from USS Growler. One destroyer was sunk, two heavily damaged (one being Shiranui). The unit commander, Captain Yoshito Miyasaka, eventually committed seppuku to take responsibility for this blunder.
