This particular SBD Dauntless is part of the Scouting Squadron 2 (VS-2). These squadrons are mainly used for recon and later on Anti-Submarine operations, such squadron designations are still in use today but are now named as Sea Control Squadrons. This particular plane was an SBD-3 nicknamed "Sail 12"  flown by Lt. John Leppla and Radionman 3rd Class John Liska. John Leppla is famous for his actions with his Dauntless dive bomber that shot down 4 Japanese planes while John Liska shot down 3 Japanese planes for a total credit of 7 for this particular plane.
