条約下で保有数に制限のあった重巡を、火力を増強した強力な軽巡で補うために開発されました。<br />

巡洋艦の主砲だったものを、戦艦の副砲として活用しました。<br />

初の三連装砲でしたが、射程・発射速度・運用面全てに高い評価を得ることになりました。<br />

「大和」型に搭載され、対空戦も可能な、性能・運用性ともに優秀な戦艦副砲となりました。<br />

後に有名な「大和」型戦艦の副砲としても採用されています。<br />

砲塔部の装甲が薄いのが玉に瑕で、諸説ありますが「大和」型の唯一の弱点という指摘もありました。<br />
